The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog (GSMD)
As a family pet, the Swissy is noted for its gentle
nature, great loyalty, and wonderful disposition
toward children.
The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is characterized by
its large, muscular stature and beautiful tricolored
markings. Males stand approximately 25.5 to 28.5
inches at the withers and weigh anywhere from 105 to
140 lbs. Females stand 23.5 to 27 inches, with weight
ranging from 85 to 110 lbs.
Our Opinion: We met this breed a few years ago.
We were utterly amazed at how wonderful they were
with children. As dog trainers & canine behaviorists
we are always asked "what is a good breed to get as
a family dog?". Labradors are always a good
response but often times people can't tolerate the
hyper puppy for 3 years. Also, in our opinion, the
over breeding of Labradors is causing some serious
problems in recent years, mostly behavior oriented.
The Greater Swiss is the answer. They are
appreciated for their calm even temperament
especially as a family dog. We highly recommend this
breed. We have them as part of our family and are
pleasantly surprised every day at how interactive they
are with people. All we can say is Sweet, Sweet,
Sweet!
They are very big and need lots of space. As with
any large breed their size can be intimidating to
strangers so socialization is KEY! Make sure you
expose your Swissy to strange people and strange
dogs from the beginning and throughout their lives.
This is very important to make sure you never have
aggression issues.
